You know you're a slowly becoming a military historian/geek when you a) watch a television series, b) examine the various medals, badges, etc on the uniforms worn by some of the characters and c) research those said medals, badges, etc and note the details down. Yeah, that's what I did before I went to bed last night (yes, I know I'm sad)...examining and researching the insignias on Hastings' uniform in the television adaptation of The Mysterious Affair at Styles and I must say the costume designers are extremely accurate in getting the historical details right. Though they probably made up the fact that his regiment was the 7th Royal Fusiliers (signified by the collar badge on his lapels) since Agatha Christie never told us which regiment he was in and probably decided to put any old medal ribbon on his uniform, I noted these things:

[Picture 1] [Picture 2]

[Picture 3] [Picture 4]

1. He was awarded the 1914 Star with a rosette (meaning that he served under enemy fire during the Battle of Mons/Retreat from Mons in 1914)
2. He was awarded the French Croix de guerre 1914-18 [Both the ribbons of numbers 1 and 2 can be seen in Picture 1 above the left breast pocket]
3. He has a Red Overseas Service Stripe on his right sleeve (meaning that he was earned it on or before 31st December 1914) and also has a Blue Overseas Service Stripe above that one signifying two years of service overseas (which corresponds to the chronology of the novels) [Seen in Picture 2]
4. He has a single wound stripe on his left sleeve (which makes complete sense since he was wounded at the Somme) [You're just able to see it in Picture 3 and it's clearer to see in Picture 4]

Yeah, I know...too many historical details. But it's interesting really that you can tell so many things about a soldier/officer just by looking at their uniform...hmm, that gives me an idea to perhaps write a paper on the importance/status/symbolism of uniforms and their role in conveying a person's rank/experiences to society seeing that uniforms were initially designed to show which side you were fighting on rather than being used as a sort of status symbol...but that's for another day XD

[Picture 5]

But they also got it right with Chief Inspector Japp who they also portrayed as being a war veteran himself in The Chocolate Box episode seeing that they stuck three medals [you can see the 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal in Picture 5] on his police dress uniform (although rather strangely the two 'pips' on his collar signify him being an Inspector rather than a Chief Inspector who is supposed to have three).

Anyways, moving on from random historical details and onto my dilemma...although I said that I'd have bought a new phone and mp3 player by now, I haven't. That's because I want to just get one instead of two. But the problem is I DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE TO GET! Should I get the iPod Touch seeing that I listen to music so often and my Creative Zen's battery is slowly dying out on me or should I get the Nokia E71 seeing that my phone too is in need of a revamp? I usually need to listen to music more than I need to use a phone but still... *sigh*
