This journal is now Friends Only. It's a place where I post my (usually random) thoughts, reviews, sketches, fanfic as well as a place to write about my life in general. Rants pop up occasionally as does a considerable degree of fangirling over discussion on various things (which includes but is not limited to British history, opera, the Duke of Wellington and Poirot). If you've been led here via my Poirot stories on [ profile] poirot_fans, most of my stories are either on or on Archive of My Own under the username austenfan1990.

If you wish to read my posts, please comment below and add me as a friend and I'll probably friend you back. Cheers!

Came across a 'summary' of that dreaded POTO film on Tumblr and found the following exchange hilariously funny. Despite it being written as a summary of the film, it might as well apply to the stage musical.

FIRMIN: Whoa, check out the blonde with the headlights.

FIRMIN: Oh. Well, what about the hot brunette?

MADAME GIRY: Zhe es LAIK mah dottair.

ANDRE: Hey, we’re all French, right?

FIRMIN: Last time I checked, yes.

ANDRE: Well, then why is she the only one with a French accent?

Lol, I love Firmin and Andre...oh, and Madame Giry too (the one in the original musical and not that horrible sequel in which she transforms into a creepy Mrs Danvers type).

Wait a minute...David Suchet was the voice of BMW in its UK adverts? Did some searching on Youtube and found an advert dating from 1994 and gosh, if I didn't know that it was Suchet, I never would have guessed though his voice is certainly recognisable (though it's obviously a far cry from his Poirot voice!). Interesting. He's also given me another reason to like BMW even more now! XDD

Gah, why the hell do I have to get a cold now?! I'm sniffling all over the place and my nose is running like a bloody water tap. I'm taking these cold and flu hot remedies which my mum fortunately stuffed into my luggage before I left Hong Kong and they've helped somewhat since I kind of feel better than yesterday but I'm still sneezing and sniffling which is rather annoying and which is also the reason why I didn't go to the archives today. Don't think the people at the archives would appreciate me sneezing all over their precious documents *shudders*

Fingers crossed that I'll get this little cold under control. Bought some green tea (by Twinings too...I've never tried green tea from Twinings) which has helped me in the past with colds - I think I even cured myself once of a cold by just continually drinking green tea a few years ago - so hopefully it'll work this time as well!

Night's falling and the air is filled with anxious anticipation as to what tonight will bring in terms of the riots. It's eerily like a war zone or the feeling you get when you're just about to go over the top in the FIrst World War. Hopefully all this mindless violence will go away soon. The Londoners are having a pretty rough go of the it at the moment.

Oh, and just managed to get a Pottermore account before the early registration period ended. I'm not as hyped up about Pottermore as my other Potter-minded friends but it's nice to get an early look at what exactly the whole thing is going to be about. *ponders*

Ooh, just read that David Suchet's going to be in an upcoming new television adaptation of Dickens' Great Expectations, which is probably my favourite Dickens novel (and I loved the 1946 film version with John Mills and Alec Guinness). He'll be playing Mr Jaggers and the series is currently due to be broadcast in the UK this Christmas.

Now if only they can get a move on with the Poirot adaptations as well then I'll be quite happy!

Watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 again today. And Alan Rickman's Snape is still breaking hearts, it seems. I didn't cry like many Snape fans but goodness me, it was (and still) heartbreaking. For God's sake, just give Rickman the bloody Oscar now.

Oh, and is just me or is it that some of the scenes in the trailers weren't in the final film? E.g. like Voldemort saying 'Why do you live?' to Harry, Snape walking down a dark passage towards Godric's Hollow and looking up at it? Interesting. I hope there'll be a director's cut or something.

14th July 2011.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is finally here! And I'll be watching it in a couple of hours. =) Review and spoilers possibly to follow in another post if I can find the time!
almaviva90: (The Merry Widow)
Just realised that it's only one month until I see/hear Sir Tom (and Flott) live at last! The 6th of August will be a bit hectic since [ profile] enserric will be moving houses that day but hopefully everything will go without a hitch *crosses fingers* and then we can proceed to sightseeing about Cambridge the following day.

And also I think that nearly all of my recent LJ entries are related to HP. I really must stop fangirling over HP now until I actually get to see the final film next week (which is also when I leave for London *le gasp*). Oh, tension and nervousness galore.
almaviva90: (Captain Hastings)
Only one word for this: SQUEEEEEEEE

almaviva90: (Poirot and Hastings)
Hurrah! David Suchet has hinted that the five remaining Poirot novels might be filmed when he received his CBE last month!

“I have done all but five of the stories. My lifelong dream will be releasing the Poirot boxset of all the novels she [Agatha Christie] wrote. It may happen. There’s a green light flickering and I’m waiting for it to be steady. It may be next autumn.”

*jumps up and down in happiness*

I have tickets for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2!!!

Bought them yesterday ($130 for each...more expensive than usual because it's in 3D. Pity there's no 2D version available here...) after I found out that you could buy them in advance.

14th July, here I come! =DDD
almaviva90: (TA 1980s)

Finally managed to get a copy of the Song Prize final broadcast on BBC Four on 18th June and TA still looks fantastic for a man of his age...*sigh* Can't believe he's going to be 67 this September!

Hope he'll look (and sound) as good as he does here when I finally get to see him on 6th August!

"I think Alan Rickman gives what is quite possibly the film performance of his career. He is stunning in the film, really." - Daniel Radcliffe on AR's performance in Deathly Hallows - Part 2

Why thank you for saying that, Daniel you've just made me want the 14th of July to come even more quickly...

Just saw this quote from Never Let Me Go being paired can never guess what...a piece of Snape/Lily fan art:

"I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it's just too much. The current's too strong. They've got to let go, drift apart. That's how it is with us. It's a shame...because we've loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can't stay together forever."

I think my love for Kazuo Ishiguro and his writing just exploded by a million times...
almaviva90: (Benedict Cumberbatch)
About 3 weeks until I leave for London...the tension and excitement is beginning to build up!

And also three weeks until HP7 Part 2 comes out! Only one thing is on my mind regarding that film...SNAPE.
almaviva90: (HF in Firefox)
Well, there I've gone and done it at last...I've finally set up a LJ community for Hugh Fraser. My fangirling over this fellow really must cease although I think that might be a little difficult seeing that he is Hugh Fraser who you simply *cannot* prevent yourself from fangirling over, especially after watching him as Hastings in Poirot among other things.

But whatever, I'm happy so that should be fine by me. :)

Happy Waterloo Day!

(Scotland Forever! Lady Butler's famous painting of the charge of Royal Scot Greys at Waterloo)
It's nearly two hundred years today that the Battle of Waterloo was fought on the flat plains of Waterloo but that won't happen until four years later (18th June 2015).

Coincidentally it's also Philip Jackson's birthday today (best known Chief Inspector James Japp from Poirot) so happy birthday, Mr Jackson!
almaviva90: (TA Guglielmo 1981)
I've tried for hours to sleep but to no avail and it's already six-something in the morning now and in about two hours I'll have to be on my way to work...*sigh* Damn insomnia.

My current stint of insomnia is perhaps solely due to the fact that I bought my first DSLR camera yesterday, a Nikon D3100! (I might have to blame/thank David Suchet for getting me interested in Nikon cameras as I've seen him use them almost all the time even in costume as Poirot! But that's beside the point...XDD) I've been meaning to buy one for quite a while now since though I liked my Canon digital camera and it's taken pictures of some very special moments and events, I've increasingly been dissatisfied with the picture quality and how noisy the lens are when I zoom in onto something. Also, a DSLR is definitely in order for taking photographs of London/the other camera just won't do. I'm still fiddling around with the controls/features but so far the photos I've taken so far are marvellous and a vast improvement over my compact digital camera (obviously) so I'm happy with it.

EDIT: And I've just watched the second trailer of HP7 Part 2...OMG. They have more scenes of Lily and Snape (okay, the latter only has one more here where he's saying the bit where they've been keeping Harry alive for years so that he can die at the proper moment, etc)! And apparently, Snape has two appearances on the soundtrack, the first being 'Snape's Demise' while the other is 'Severus and Lily'. Less than 30 days to go until the end!
